Renting a meeting room by the hour with no monthly fee
Three ways of paying for a meeting room coexist in Barcelona, and the gap between them can run to hundreds of euros a year for identical use.
- Monthly membership. You pay a fixed fee and rooms come at a reduced rate, or a few hours are included.
- Prepaid hour packs. You buy a block up front and draw it down, usually with an expiry date.
- Pay-as-you-go. You pay per booking, with no sign-up and no commitment.
None is better in the abstract. It depends on how many meetings you hold and how predictable they are.
When each model pays off
The break-even point arrives sooner than you would think. An example with round numbers: a €60 monthly fee that brings the room down to €10/h, against pay-as-you-go at €20 per meeting.

On these numbers the membership never pays off; the hourly rate would have to drop sharply or the meeting count rise a long way. Run this sum with the real figures from the venues you are comparing — it takes two minutes and usually settles the decision.

The small print on prepaid packs
Hour packs are the model that produces the most surprises:
- Expiry. A ten-hour pack that expires after three months is, in practice, a quarterly fee.
- Minimum draw-down per booking. If every booking deducts two hours, your ten-hour pack is five meetings, not ten.
- Refunds. Usually there are none. Change office or city and you lose the balance.
- Tied to one room. Some packs are valid only for a specific room or a specific site.
What to ask before booking
Four questions settle almost everything:
- What is the minimum booking length?
- Does the advertised price include VAT?
- Are the projector, whiteboard and wifi included, or billed separately?
- How far in advance can you cancel free of charge?
If all four answers are clear and in writing, the rest usually goes fine.

The per-person charge is one-off, not per hour: a five-person meeting pays €10 under that heading whether it lasts one hour or six.
There is a €20 minimum per booking. It exists because opening up, preparing the space and cleaning it afterwards costs the same whatever the length; below that figure the trip does not pay for itself. Prices exclude VAT.

Can you rent a meeting room without joining a coworking space?
Yes. Many venues reserve their rooms for members or require a prepaid pack of hours, but there are also rooms rented by the hour to anyone. At WorkSpace.Cat there is no membership and no sign-up: you pay only for the hours you book.
How many meetings a month before a membership pays off?
As a rough rule, below four or five short meetings a month, pay-as-you-go works out cheaper. Above that it is worth redoing the sum with the actual rates of each venue.
